Why Deck Footings in Adelaide's North Go So Deep

What reactive clay does

Large parts of northern Adelaide - Salisbury, Playford and surrounds - sit on reactive clay soil. Playford in particular has reactive black clay, among the most movement-prone ground in metro Adelaide.

Reactive clay does something ordinary soil does not. When it takes up moisture, in winter or from a leaking pipe or a garden bed, it swells. When it dries out through an Adelaide summer, it shrinks. The ground itself rises and falls through the seasons, sometimes by a significant amount.

Why that matters for a deck

A deck is only as stable as what its footings sit on. If the footings are shallow and bear into the reactive clay layer, the deck rides the soil's seasonal movement.
